MIT is developing a reusable silicone face mask!

Researchers at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) have developed a new version of the N95 mask. The goal? Make it more efficient but also more comfortable and more durable. The research gave rise to a first prototype.

A durable mask

The mask is the emblematic object of the current health crisis. In France, wearing a mask has recently become compulsory in enclosed spaces . A measure nevertheless considered insufficient for some. Remember that the FFP2 mask has the most efficient filtration system on the market. However, its price and rarity mean that this type of mask is often reserved for nursing staff .

In addition, this mask has, like surgical masks, a very limited duration and is for single use . Its use is therefore not without generating problems with regard to the environment. Indeed, at the start of the epidemic, an NGO spoke of how the abandonment of masks was impacting the beaches of several Chinese cities. More recently, the Tara Foundation issued the alert concerning pollution with masks (and gloves) on the beaches and banks of seven major European rivers. Activists spoke of a rapid fragmentation of these masks in microplastic particles.

In a press release published on July 9, 2020, MIT researchers detail their innovation. This is a mask based on the N95 (FFP2 equivalent). However, the prototype in question is made of durable silicone rubber obtained through simple injection molding. However, remember that current surgical and N95 masks are made of polypropylene.

A second prototype in progress

Besides, the durability of the mask also lies elsewhere. Indeed, the particle filter fitted to this mask requires less material than the usual N95s. Thus, it is about using fewer resources in the manufacturing process. Users will simply need to change the filter each time they are used, and the rest of the mask will need to be sterilized.

Scientists also thought about the comfort of the mask. Indeed, the twenty people who tested the prototype claimed to have felt no difference between it and the traditional N95. In addition, testers appreciated the fit and breathability of the prototype. We should also mention the ongoing development of a second prototype that is even more durable, efficient and comfortable.

James Byrne, one of the scientists who participated in the research, reminds that the coronavirus at the origin of the Covid-19 epidemic will not disappear until a vaccine will not be available. The person concerned indicates that in the meantime, there will always be a need for masks , whether at the level of health personnel or the general public.
