Compression stockings for an elderly person:what are they for?

Compression stockings are a medical device that you may wear at different times in your life. Sometimes they are prescribed following surgery. Women sometimes wear them after giving birth. Most often, compression stockings are intended for the elderly. What are they for ? Here's everything you need to know about them!

Compression stockings:what are they?

Compression stockings are therefore a medical device that can be used to treat venous pathologies. Thanks to the stockings, illnesses can be taken care of at the first symptoms. The well-being of patients is ensured.

Compression stockings are made with a specific textile whose role is to exert permanent pressure on the legs. This pressure is greatest at the ankle. Thanks to this medical device, blood circulation is improved but also venous return, in other words the return of blood to the heart. In addition to promoting blood circulation, compression stockings also have the role of reducing capillary leaks and optimizing lymphatic drainage.

In terms of shape, a compression stocking is a large sock. Several sizes exist. Some models are worn below the knees, others above. Some stockings go up to the top of the thigh and some are tights. It is the patient who chooses the type of stockings they wish to wear. He should feel good inside. Several colors are available. Compression stockings are worn during the day but it is best to take them off at night.

What is the difference between compression stockings and compression stockings?

There are support stockings and compression stockings. Although compression stockings put pressure on the legs, they are different from compression stockings. These exert less pressure at rest but limit the increase in volume of the lower limbs during muscle contractions.

The benefits of compression stockings

Compression stockings are very useful for improving the daily lives of the patients who wear them. They are especially beneficial for the elderly. Thanks to this medical device, it is possible to:

  • reduce pain,
  • reduce swelling,
  • reduce the feeling of heavy legs,
  • reduce leg edema,
  • reduce venous insufficiency.

In addition, wearing compression stockings can promote the healing of an ulcer or treat phlebitis. In general, compression stockings are also used to prevent venous pathologies such as thrombosis, phlebitis or oedema.

Why are compression stockings prescribed?

Compression stockings are prescribed in different situations. It is possible that the wearing of this medical device is recommended after surgery. It is also recommended in case of varicose veins, if they measure more than 3 millimeters, chronic edema, venous eczema, lipodermatosclerosis (chronic inflammation of the skin) or ulcers.

How to choose compression stockings?

As we have already said, compression stockings are medical devices. Also, a patient cannot choose them freely. It must be accompanied by specialists namely:

  • the phlebologist who performs the clinical examination,
  • the ultrasound machine that performs a Doppler,
  • the pharmacist who takes the measurements and directs you to the correct model.

In addition to the choice of model, the compression force must be determined. There are four families, or pressure classes. Here are the possible forces from weakest to strongest in millimeters of mercury:

  • Class 1 =10-15mmHg,
  • Class 2 =15-20 mmHg,
  • Class 3 =20-36 mmHg,
  • Class 4 =more than 36 mmHg.

It is essential to choose the right compression stockings. If this medical device is worn incorrectly, it can have very harmful effects on blood circulation, well-being and sometimes even quality of life. The patient must learn to put them on but also to recognize any anomalies.

Are there any contraindications?

Wearing compression stockings can be beneficial in many situations. There are contraindications that must be taken into consideration. Among the pathologies, there are:

  • obliterating arteriopathy in the lower limbs (obstructive arteries),
  • advanced diabetic microangiopathy,
  • blue phlebitis with arterial compression,
  • septic thrombosis.

Even if compression stockings are not medicine, it is forbidden to use them in the context of self-medication.

How to get compression stockings?

Compression stockings can only be obtained on medical prescription. In the elderly, this prescription is made after in-depth examinations. These will determine in particular the compression force. It is then essential to go to a pharmacy so that a specialist can take precise measurements.

Compression stockings are reimbursed by health insurance and mutual insurance companies. The price of this type of device is between 20 and 80€. Of course, it is possible to have several pairs in order to wear them on a daily basis. Compression stockings are worn for 6 months. Beyond that, they no longer fulfill their functions.
