Online training

Developed for the home workout experience, this trend is leveraging digital streaming technology to offer online group, individual or educational training programs. Online training is available 24/7 and can be a live or pre-recorded lesson.

Wearable technology

Includes devices such as fitness trackers, smartwatches, heart rate monitors, and GPS tracking devices that can count steps and track heart rate, body temperature, calories, sitting time, and sleep time.

Body weight training

Bodyweight training uses minimal equipment, making it more affordable. This trend is not just limited to push-ups and pull-ups, but allows people to “go back to basics” with fitness.

Outdoor Activities

Include small group walks, group rides and organized walking groups. Participants can meet in a park, walking area or on a bike path for short events, day-long events or planned weekly walking tours.

High-Intensity Interval Training (HIIT)

Includes short bursts of activity followed by a short period of rest or recovery. Despite concerns from some fitness professionals, these 30-minute or less sessions remain a popular form of exercise around the world.

Virtual training

This fusion of group exercise with technology provides workouts designed for convenience, tailored to schedules and needs, and typically done in big-screen gyms.

This global health initiative encourages health care providers to include a physical activity assessment and associated referrals to certified fitness professionals in the community as part of every patient visit.

Strength training with free weights

Instructors focus on teaching proper form for dumbbells, dumpbells, kettlebells, and/or medicine balls exercises. The resistance gradually increases as the correct form is achieved.

Fitness programs for older adults

As baby boomers age after retirement, many health and fitness professionals are taking the time to develop age-appropriate fitness programs to keep older adults healthy and active.

Individual training continues to be a strong trend as the personal training profession becomes more accessible online, in gyms, at home and in workplaces with fitness facilities. Personal training includes fitness testing and goal setting where the trainer works one-on-one with a client to prescribe workouts specific to individual needs.
