Whole-grain products may lower the risk of colon cancer

Eating whole grain products such as brown rice and whole wheat bread can lower the risk of colon cancer. This was announced by the World Cancer Research Fund. Experts emphasize that although no lifestyle offers a guarantee against cancer, a healthy diet and lifestyle play an important role in the prevention of colorectal cancer.

Now, for the first time, there is strong scientific evidence that eating three servings of whole grains a day (equivalent to 90 grams) can lower your risk of colon cancer by 17 percent. This comes on top of previous evidence that eating fiber-rich foods lowers the risk of colon cancer. The report analyzed all available evidence worldwide on diet, weight and exercise in relation to colorectal cancer risk. The findings confirm that the risk of colon cancer is increased by:
Eating processed meats, such as ham and salami
Eating too much red meat (more than 500 grams per week, prepared weight), such as beef and pork
Being overweight and obese
Drinking two or more glasses of alcohol a day
The report also shows that people who exercise more have a lower risk of colon cancer compared to with people who do little physical activity. All forms of exercise count, including gardening, cycling and walking.
