Eating healthier when you go away for a day

The first amusement parks, zoos and museums have signed the Healthy Out Ambition. This brings us one step closer to healthy eating during a day out. With this, the day attractions want to indicate that they strive to offer a healthier food range from their organization. The ambition of Gezond Uit is an initiative of JOGG, the organization that makes the physical and social living environment of children and young people healthier.

Healthy Out:JOGG initiative for healthy eating during a day out

The following day attractions have signed the Ambition to include healthier food with a day out:

  • Toverland theme park
  • Adventure Park Hellendoorn
  • CORPUS
  • The Efteling
  • GaiaZOO
  • Royal Citizens' Zoo
  • NEMO Science Museum
  • Ouwehands Zoo
  • Walibi Holland
  • Wildlands Adventure Zoo Emmen

By signing the Ambition, the day attractions commit themselves to working towards an increasingly healthy range of food within their day attractions for the public that is away for a day. It strikes me that the Beekse Bergen is not yet included.

Why offer healthy food during a day out?

A healthy future starts with a healthy childhood, according to JOGG. Even during a day out it is important to eat and drink healthy. That is why JOGG works together with day attractions on a healthier food offer during a day out.

What do you think? Are you waiting for a wide choice from a healthy range during a day out? Or is it a complete party for you when you go out and such a day ends in a delicious greasy fries with mayo?

The basis for the healthier range of food is based on the Healthier Eating Environments Guidelines of the Netherlands Nutrition Centre. I was not aware of the existence of this guideline, but I do wonder why they are now targeting the theme parks, zoos and museums. My preference would be that during a day out we simply opt for some tasty things that may not be too healthy and that there is a 'ban on' at all schools on the snack vending machines and sauce rolls corner in the canteens. Isn't there much more to get there?

Perhaps they are also working on that, but in my opinion the damage that is done there is a lot greater than that fries or ice cream that we eat during a day out. Do not you think?

Have fun sinning during a day at Efteling or a visit to the zoo

That one time in the year that we go to the Efteling, I just love not paying attention. To eat a nice fries after I come out of the Baron and to get an ice cream or to fill a candy bag on the Anton Pieckplein. Anyway, that's personal. And I'm actually curious about how you feel about this.

Day attractions can be found on the Gezond Uit website to help you get started with Gezond Uit. On the website they can find inspiration to offer healthy food during a day out in an attractive way. In the practical examples, day attractions show how they work on a healthier offer, how they deal with challenges and which solutions they come up with.

Very nice, above. But what I read, for example, is that they no longer offer a standard portion of fries at Nemo, but a small portion of fries. And that at Gaiazoo they 'seduce' the guests to opt for smaller portions. Of course that sounds like thinking along, but I'm secretly curious what happens to the price. Not you? It wouldn't surprise me if you would soon pay as much for the smaller portions as in the past for the larger portions.

Conclusion:a healthy plate during our outing

Actually it is very simple. I prefer to decide for myself what I eat. That there is a healthy range of tasty normal Dutch sandwiches that are topped with fresh lettuce and many more goodies, I think that's completely okay. And I think it already is. But that technically all kinds of marketing is devised to 'protect' us against a greasy bite during a day out? I personally think that's an exaggeration. I will soon feel guilty if I let my children pick out something tasty during a day out in public!
