A house full of proteins, shakes and bars; 46 and working out fanatically

I actually thought that the man's eating kicks here in the house had been over for some time, but since that gentleman announced his second Krav Maga exam I'm starting to have slight doubts again. Now I am used to protein-rich food at home and a bar and shake here and there, but with the exam in its wake, my house is turning into a storehouse of proteins 😉 .

Protein-rich foods in fridge and pantry

Which one of you recognizes this? 'Someone' in the house decides to start exercising fanatically and wants to adjust his or her diet accordingly. Because fanatic sports and muscle building go hand in hand with eating protein-rich food.

Protein-rich food also fits well in a healthy diet, and if you combine that with as many healthy fats as possible, you're doing well.

Why protein-rich food if you exercise fanatically

Okay, let me get into that a little bit first. Protein-rich foods are really important if you are an avid exerciser. My brother was already focused on that 30 years ago and the same rules still apply when it comes to food and proteins. Proteins are very important for your muscles.

Do you want to ensure that your muscle building goes well and that your muscles can recover well after exercise? Then you need protein-rich food. Not only during the day, but also after exercise. For example, Frank always eats a bowl of yogurt after exercise, to supplement the proteins for muscle recovery.

I also try to keep an eye on this with Luc and Lotte. If they've been to Krav Maga or Luc comes back from Crossfit, then it's time for protein. I myself will soon be paying more attention to it, because I have a Maxtrainer M7 at home since this week that I will be working with, but more about that soon!

Why protein-rich food if you want to lose weight (without sports)

Even without exercise you need protein-rich food. For example, if you want to lose weight, then protein-rich food is important to ensure that you do not lose muscle mass. At Newfysic, I was also extremely careful about this because I can't lose the muscles around my knee after my skiing accident last year. When you lose weight, your muscle mass is lost first, but you can keep it up to date with the proteins.

In addition, it is also a fact that when you eat enough proteins you feel full sooner, so that you don't need to snack as quickly. So nice to have.

Did you know that eating protein increases your metabolism? That is also good if you want to lose weight.

I just find it a challenge to have enough protein-rich food at home every time and still cook alternately. That is why Frank, especially at the time of an upcoming exam, likes to have protein shakes and bars in the house. This way he can still supplement his proteins without every meal having to be fully focused on that. In addition, those bars are also super handy to grab during such an exam. If you have to work physically hard for 3 hours at a time, then it is necessary to supplement it in the right way.

Examples of healthy protein foods

If you also want to pay more attention to eating protein-rich foods, then the list below may be useful for you. Keep in mind that in addition to proteins, you also eat the other necessary products for a healthy diet and that you do not get too many fats.

  • Eggs
  • Skimmed cottage cheese and yogurt
  • Chicken and turkey
  • Fish
  • Cheese
  • Legumes such as lentils, peas and beans (try this lentil soup for example, it's super tasty)
  • Bean sprouts, leek shoots, alfalfa and other sprout species
  • Quinoa (also very tasty)

Tell me, do you also have periods when you eat more protein than usual? And what is the reason for you?
