Traffic accidents:women are more often the victims

An accident is in a small corner. Also in traffic. You know that, if you've ever been in an accident. It could have happened like that. Also through no fault of your own. Last year there were 629 fatalities in traffic. The vast majority of them are cyclists. But also striking:there are also more women among road victims. Traffic accidents often end badly for them.

Traffic accidents:they happen every day. Also fatal accidents. And research has now shown that women are more often involved. Before the first guy starts claiming that it's because of our driving style… that's not the case.

In general, men are better at the practical handling of the car. They estimate spaces better and are therefore better at parking, for example. But do men also drive safer than women? So no! For example, they wear their seat belt less often. They spend more time on their phone behind the wheel. And they drive more often with a drink (too much). However, women are more likely to die in traffic. How about that?

Traffic accidents among women

The driving style of women is therefore generally safer than that of the average man. Why do traffic accidents often end badly for them? In any case, it has nothing to do with a quick make-up touch up. In fact, it has nothing to do with 'the woman' per se... but with her mode of transport.

Women are more likely to drive smaller cars. In cookie tins. This also makes them more vulnerable in traffic. Hubby's fat bowl can take a considerably tougher beating. Women also cycle more often. Cyclists are the most vulnerable group in traffic. In other words, we are a lot less protected when we hit the road. Even though we wear our seat belts obediently.

Protection in traffic

What can you do yourself to be safer when you hit the road? First, go for a safe car. That does not mean that everyone has to drive in a big box. This makes it less safe for cyclists. Before purchasing, however, be well informed about the road safety of your new car. Are there airbags, for example?

On the bike you obviously provide good protection and lighting. Always wear a scooter helmet, if that is your mode of transport. And teach your kids the traffic rules as early as possible. Learning to ride a bike isn't just about learning to keep your balance… it's also about getting out on the road safely. Fortunately, this is also taken into account at school.
