These are the benefits of reading before going to sleep

Not only does it relax you, but there are many more benefits to reading before going to sleep.

A review site for mattresses and other bed accessories surveyed 1,000 adults about their bedtime reading routine.

This varied from once or twice a week (11%) to every day (8%). On average, people read no less than 43 minutes before going to sleep.

Why read-before-bedtime

And whether reading just a few times a month or every day before bed, everyone did it for the same reasons:

  • to calm down
  • to reduce stress
  • to fall asleep faster
  • to let your mind wander
  • to sleep better

Sleep

As many as three quarters of respondents think it is harder for them to fall asleep if they don't read and almost everyone (96%) advises others to read before going to sleep.

As many as 76 of those who read before bed are satisfied with the quality of their sleep. That's quite a bit more than those who don't read before bed (64%). The 'readers' also sleep an average of 1 hour and 37 minutes longer than the 'non-readers'.

More striking-results:

  • 'Readers' earn an average of 3,300 euros more than 'non-readers'
  • 'Readers' make healthier choices; for example, they more often opt for a healthy diet and make more frequent appointments with the general practitioner or dentist.
  • 'Readers' are also more positive in life than 'non-readers'
