Dry eyes:it doesn't make you happy. It is very annoying and unfortunately happens to many people. In most cases it can't hurt, but what is the cause and what can you do about it? In this article we tell you everything you need to know about dry eyes.

What are dry eyes?

Tear fluid is produced by glands around your eye and is made up of water, oil and lipids. Blinking spreads the fluid over your eyes, stabilizing your vision and protecting your eyes from infection. You can suffer from dry eyes if you don't produce enough tears, if your tears are of poor quality or if the moisture evaporates too quickly.

What are the symptoms?

If you have dry eyes, you may suffer from:

• Sore and tired eyes

• Irritated, burning eyes

• Blurred vision

• Increased sensitivity to light

• Red eyes

• Tearing eyes

What causes dry eyes in contact lens wearers?

Do you wear contact lenses? Then dry eyes can be caused by wearing the wrong or worn lenses. There are many types of contact lenses, for example hard contact lenses, soft contact lenses, day contact lenses and night contact lenses. Do you notice that your lenses do not fit well? Then you might be better off ordering other lenses. If you have no idea which lenses you need, you can always contact a contact lens specialist for advice.

What can you do yourself?

In most cases, dry eyes are not harmful, but it is of course very annoying. The easiest way to get rid of it is to simply blink your eyes enough. This causes your eyes to produce more tears. If you have dry eyes, it is important that you get enough fluids. Therefore, drink at least 1.5 liters of fluid every day. In addition, it is important to keep the humidity in the house and office in balance. Your tear film dries faster if the air in your home or office is too dry. You can keep the humidity in balance by placing containers with water in rooms. This is definitely recommended when the heating is on.

What does the treatment look like?

How dry eye is treated depends on the underlying cause. If the symptoms are serious, you can get medication or eye drops from your doctor. So do not hesitate to contact your doctor if you notice that the complaints are getting worse.
