Is it bad to sleep with a bra on?

We all do it sometimes, even if it is accidentally:sleeping with your bra on. But is it actually a bad idea to sleep with your bra on or is it not that bad? We answer that pressing question for you!

Why do we wear bras?

Your breasts are made up of tissue and tendons. During your daily activities, such as when you walk or do chores, your breasts move up and down. Over time, this can cause the tendons to stretch and can also cause pain in your neck, back and shoulders. At least, if you don't give your breasts the right support.

A bra helps your breasts to stay firm and supports your overall posture. This not only makes you feel more comfortable, but also more confident. But does this also make sense during bedtime?

Sleeping with your bra on

Wearing a bra is mainly about your own comfort. If you find it more comfortable to sleep with a bra on, we will not advise you to do so. But we can tell you something about the type of bra that is best for sleeping and the type of bra that you should avoid at night.

The worst bras to sleep in

The biggest no-go when wearing a bra when you go to sleep is bras that are too tight. It is better not to wear a tight sports bra or an underwire bra while sleeping. If you wear these for a long time (for example in your sleep) they can press on your lymphatic system, which does not exactly have a positive effect on your body. An underwire bra can shift in your sleep and make it extremely uncomfortable, which can disrupt your sleep. Tight bras also cause skin rashes and fungal infections faster…

Won't a looser bra cause your breasts to lose their shape? Absolutely not. It also does not make them fuller or firmer, but can above all give you that little bit of comfort you need.

The best bras for sleeping

Comfort is really the key to success here. Maternity and nursing bras are popular options when it comes to bedtime bras, but lounge bras (a newer concept) are also ideal for bed. Lounge bras often have simple silhouettes, are soft, made of breathable fabric and offer you minimal support. Exactly what you are looking for before going to sleep, so!

Always make sure that you wear a bra that fits you well, because it is better not to wear a (too) tight bra for long periods of time. Is your bra pinching your ribcage, chest or shoulders? Then you better not wear it while sleeping. Also make sure you put on a clean bra! A dirty bra, especially if you've sweated in it, can cause a rash or fungal infections. So do your skin a favor and put on a clean bra before going to bed.
