This is what happens when you stop wearing a bra

Have you ever considered giving up wearing a bra, but are you afraid of the consequences it might have on your body? Then you really want to read this article – believe us!

Why do we wear bras?

To understand what not wearing a bra does to your body, it is important to understand why we started wearing bras in the first place. We started doing that in 1889, because bras were seen as the best way to support your breasts. There are ligaments in your chest known as Cooper's ligaments. This is connective tissue that helps keep your breasts in shape and in place. Not wearing a bra would weaken these ligaments, causing your breasts to sag and lose their shape.

However, we are not advised to wear a bra all day long. You sweat more, which clogs your skin pores and can cause skin irritation. There are even studies that advise against wearing bras:a 2013 study suggests that not wearing a bra can actually prevent your breasts from sagging. The reason? The support the bra provides can weaken the tissue around your breasts, causing your breasts to sag. When you stop wearing a bra, your breasts seem to sag at first. But because you will now start to appeal to the muscles around your breasts, you will notice that they become firmer and do not sag. You can even do targeted exercises to strengthen these muscles.

The verdict?

Your breasts will sag more as you get older due to both your age and gravity – two factors we have no control over. If you want to keep your breasts rounder and firmer, wearing your bra less often can work to your advantage. It also helps to stimulate blood circulation in your body:we all know the liberating feeling when we can finally take off that bra after a long day.

Of course, a bra can have more effect on your body than just support your breasts. It also helps support your back and improve your posture, especially if your breasts are a bit bigger. That is why it is recommended to wear a (sports) bra during exercise, even with light exertion.

So you don't want to wear a bra anymore? Then that's fine! Do you notice that you get some minor back pain or pain in your breasts? Then consider wearing a bralette or a comfortable bra for a little bit of support. Do you just want to keep wearing your bra? That's totally okay too!
