Untruths about your resistance

Untruths about your resistance

The virus season has already started for a while. These four claims about your resistance are often made, but they are completely untrue!

Echinacea strengthens your resistance

Not true, because there is no scientific evidence whatsoever that echinacea contributes to your immune system. Another drug, antigrippine, can have a positive effect on your immune system, but that is mainly because the drug is full of vitamin C. That is the active ingredient. So you might as well eat more fruit.

Washing your hands often will prevent you from getting sick

Not true, because bacteria and viruses roam everywhere. So if you have just washed your hands and you open a door, it is possible that you still have a virus on your hands. Moreover, water and soap cannot wash bacteria and viruses off your hands, you need hand alcohol for that. And washing your hands often can also eliminate the good bacteria that live on your skin and damage the skin barrier. Which actually increases the chance of getting sick. It is therefore recommended not to wash your hands excessively. Hygiene is important, but don't overthink it. When should you wash your hands? After visiting the toilet, after working in the garden and before eating.

A face mask prevents contamination with viruses and bacteria

Not true, because bacteria and viruses are so small that they can easily pass through such a cap.

By wearing a scarf you prevent a cold

Not true, because pathogens might as well get into your body. Scarf or no scarf.
