Why do you get muscle pain when you are sick?

Muscle pain is one of the symptoms of the flu, but how is it possible that you get muscle pain when you are sick?

When you are or become ill, your immune system is put to work. White blood cells send signals (interleukins) throughout the body to warn other white blood cells. These substances can build up in the muscles and that causes muscle pain. When exercising, muscle soreness is caused by a build-up of lactic acid. When you are sick, muscle pain is also caused by a build-up, but of other substances.
