What does the liver do?

The liver removes waste and toxic substances that do not belong in the body.

From smoothies to nicotine and greasy bites; everything we ingest passes through the liver, a huge organ at the top of the abdomen the size of a football. The liver is a kind of factory that plays a role in many important processes in the body. The main functions of the liver are:detoxification, storage of blood and production of bile. Bile ensures that fats are better absorbed in the intestine. The liver also plays an important role in the metabolism of carbohydrates, proteins and fats. All these tasks generate so much heat and energy that we stay at the right temperature. The liver is responsible for eighty percent of your body temperature.

  • The liver is your largest internal organ and weighs on average one and a half kilos. The liver is located in the upper right side of the abdominal cavity.
  • The liver is a self-healing organ. If three quarters are surgically removed, it will grow back on its own.
