8 tips for good hygiene in the kitchen

A few years ago there was a campaign to promote hygiene in the kitchen. That may sound strange and the reactions were not all positive. Yet the subject is not so crazy.

Good hygiene in the kitchen keeps the kitchen fresh, it prevents bad odors and it can prevent a food infection.

  1. Do the dishes immediately after cooking and wipe all surfaces with a fresh dishcloth.
  2. Change your dishcloth every day. Thrown wet in a corner, they are a nest for bacteria. If you want to use them again, rinse and wring your dishcloth well.
  3. Wipe splatters directly from your stove to avoid stubborn stains.
  4. Use separate cutting boards for vegetables, meat and fish to avoid cross-contamination.
  5. Place your waste bin under or close to the sink, so that you immediately have cleaning agent at hand to clean it when you change the garbage bag.
  6. Wash your hands before you start cooking and also in between when you touch meat.
  7. Make sure that your leftover food that you heat is heated properly.
  8. Make sure your fridge is at the right temperature. This is important to keep food good for as long as possible. The ideal temperature for a refrigerator is 4 degrees.
