Tips against snoring

Do you suffer from a snoring partner, or do you know that you can snore quite loudly yourself? We give tips against snoring.

First the theory, why do you snore? When a person snores, the pharynx is too narrow for breath to flow smoothly through the airway. You can compare it to deflating an inflated balloon; a lot of air flows through a passage that is too narrow. This causes vibrations and a sawing sound is created.

The bad news:snoring gets worse with age When you sleep, all the muscles in your body relax, including those of your palate, uvula and tongue. This makes it easier to create vibrations. The older you get, the more these muscles relax. The pharynx can also narrow because someone gains weight. The throat wall then becomes more dense.

A number of solutions against snoring

  • Don't sleep on your back.
  • An anti-snoring pillow. You tie it on your back so you can't turn on your back.
  • A throat spray that reduces vibrations.
  • A band that prevents your mouth from falling open.
  • Do you suffer from a snoring partner? Earplugs can be the solution.

The anti-snoring mouthpiece You can have an anti-snoring mouthpiece made at the dentist or hospital. Note:this is quite pricey and it is usually not covered by your health insurance. Therefore, inquire in advance about the options and costs.

An anti-snoring mouthpiece is a custom-made plastic plate that you place over your lower jaw while sleeping, in order to bring your jaw forward and create more space in your throat. Your tongue falls into place better and this gives air more room to flow through the throat wall, which will reduce snoring.

Did you know that… Snoring usually starts between the ages of 30 and 40. Men generally snore more often than women. The cause of this difference is not yet entirely clear to doctors.
