Tips for a safe barbecue

Late in the evening have a drink at the fire pit, or have a nice barbecue. Make sure you do it right and avoid barbecue blunders or even burns.

Every year, on a beautiful summer evening, hundreds of people end up in the emergency room because they suffered burns. How do you prevent that?

1. Prepare yourself
Place the barbecue on a firm and flat surface. Provide a bucket of water or sand and place a fire blanket nearby. Shield the barbecue with a fire-resistant wind screen. Make sure that the garden furniture, the parasol and the tablecloth are far enough away from the barbecue.

2. Be patient
Let the barbecue heat up slowly and never use spirits or other flammable liquids. Make sure the person lighting the barbecue is sober.

3. Keep children away from the barbecue
Children are unpredictable and like to push boundaries. Therefore, make clear rules about which area is off-limits during the barbecue.

4. Never move a burning or smoldering barbecue
Make sure the fire is completely out afterwards.
