Tip from Marianne Timmer:What is good nutrition?

Santé is a co-subsponsor of Team Continu:the skating team led by Marianne Timmer. Marianne shares a tip every day to keep fit with Santé.

Marianne: 'Feeling fit is inextricably linked to healthy eating. Food provides the necessary fuels that your body needs. Without good fuel, our body does not function optimally and you feel less fit. If you are overweight, you generally feel less fit. In any case, being overweight is not healthy, it puts too much stress on the muscles, heart and joints.

Unprocessed food is the best food. Processed food contains too many added substances that have a negative effect on our body functions. Unprocessed food:
• This preserves the nutrients (vitamins and minerals)
• Prevents excessive fluctuations in the sugar metabolism
• Stimulates the digestive tract
• Contains no additives (flavours, refined sugars and dyes)

Examples of unprocessed foods:nuts, vegetables, fruits and grains.

Daily you need:

1. Fruit and vegetables
Important because of:vitamins, such as vitamin C and folic acid, minerals such as potassium, fiber and bioactive substances. You need at least 2 pieces of fruit and 200 grams of vegetables. More is of course also allowed!

2. Bread, (breakfast) grains, potatoes, rice, pasta and legumes
Important because of:carbohydrates, protein, fiber, B vitamins and minerals.

3. Dairy, meat (products), fish, egg and meat substitutes
Important because of:protein, minerals such as iron and calcium, B vitamins and fish fatty acids.

4. Fats and oil
Important because of:vitamins A, D and E and essential fatty acids.

5. Drinks
Important because of:water.'
