Calorie
Measures the amount of energy that your food supplies or that you use when you exercise. Taking in more than consuming means gaining weight.

Carbs
Carbohydrates, derived from carbohydrates.

Cardio training
Endurance training (e.g. training on the treadmill, running or on a bicycle) that improves fitness, heart and blood vessels.

CLA
Conjugated linoleic acid, a trans fatty acid naturally found in milk fat that is said to help you lose weight

Cortisol
Anti-stress hormone that raises blood sugar and can contribute to obesity.

Protein
Essential building material of all living tissues.

Fructose
Natural sugar found in fruits, table sugar, soft drinks, sweets and pastries and that stimulates fat storage.

Gastric bypass
Stomach surgery to lose weight.

Ghrelin
Hormone that regulates appetite and increases when hungry.

Glucose
Natural sugar that occurs in fruits and table sugar and in your blood.

Glycemic Index
A standard for the extent to which a food raises blood sugar levels.

Hypoglycemia
If the amount of glucose in the blood is too low, which can cause complaints such as shaking, feeling faint and aggression. Popularly:trembling hunger.
Insulin – hormone that regulates blood sugar levels, stores sugar in adipose tissue and directs it to muscle cells.

Insulin resistance
If muscle and fat cells ignore the signal of insulin, pre-diabetes and cause of obesity.

Yo-yo
Constantly losing weight and gaining weight again.

Carbohydrates
Natural source of energy. Sugar and starch, for example.

Lowcarb
Diet where you eat few carbohydrates.

MCTs
Medium-chain fatty acids (building materials for fats) that occur in coconut and olive oil, among other things, and which would help to burn fat.

Metabolic Syndrome
Combination of obesity, high blood pressure, congested arteries and diabetes.

Obesity
Severely overweight with BMI over 35

Probiotics
Bacteria that live in the intestines and that may have a beneficial effect on body weight.

Quetelet index
Official name for BMI.

Raw food
Uncooked food from plant sources.

Juice fasting
Diet of vegetable and fruit juice.

Thyroid
Butterfly-shaped gland in the neck that makes thyroid hormone and controls metabolism.

Serotonin
Brain fabric that provides a feeling of happiness and relaxation, is released, among other things, after eating carbohydrates.

Sucralose
Artificial sweetener.
