Children and medicines

Taking a medication is often difficult for children. These tips make it easier.

How do you give your child a medicine?
– Do not just give medicines to your child, only if it is really necessary and the medicines have been prescribed.
– You can mix liquid medicines with some lemonade. Do not use too much lemonade, because children usually do not drink everything. Other options for mixing:custard, yogurt, or applesauce. Ask in advance whether it is good to mix the medicine.
– With some medicines it is good to drink after taking it.
– Have a candy ready against the bad taste.
– It is likely that your child will not take any medication without having a problem. Keep going and remember that a medicine makes your child better.
– Give a compliment after taking it.
– Make taking medicine more fun by sticking a sticker on a calendar afterwards.
– Are you really not able to get your child to take the medicine? Call the pharmacy. Some drugs are available in different forms.

Research
Researchers from the Medicines Evaluation Board have conducted research into which medicines are best taken by children. The test agents were a small tablet, powder, suspension and syrup. A small tablet and the syrup came out the best in the test. The study used placebos with a neutral taste. The results could be different if the drugs have a bad taste.
