Is it necessary to use a tongue scraper, or can you just as well use your toothbrush to clean your tongue

Question :More and more often I see toothbrushes with tongue scrapers or separate scrapers in shops. I clean my tongue every day with the regular bristles of my brush. Is that just as good? Or is a special scraper better? And how often should you actually clean your tongue? V. L., NIJMEGEN

Dentist Mascha Koster: "Bacteria in food particles on the back of the tongue produce sulphur. That smells unpleasant. Food residues are more easily left behind on rough tongues than on smooth tongues. Someone with a rough tongue is more likely to have tongue deposits and therefore bad breath. Cleaning the tongue reduces tongue deposits and gives a cleaner feeling. It has no effect on gum health. Research shows that cleaning the tongue with a separate tongue cleaner (scraper) is more effective than with a toothbrush. You are doing well if you clean the tongue twice a day:once in the morning and once in the evening.'
