Lifestyle and environmental factors increase cancer risk

British research shows that almost half of the cancers arising in 2010 are related to various lifestyle and environmental factors.

Unsurprisingly, the single greatest risk factor in both men and women is smoking † Nearly 20 percent of all new cases of cancer related to this addiction.

The researchers base their conclusions on data from some 134,000 new cases of cancer in the United Kingdom. In addition, the lifestyle and environmental factors of about 10 years earlier.

Men
In men, after smoking tobacco , a poor diet is the culprit in 6.1 percent of cancer cases. Then followed work-related exposure, alcohol consumption , obesity and meat consumption and UV radiation

Women
In women too, tobacco smoking was number one , followed by obesity, infections, UV radiation, suboptimal consumption of fruit and vegetables and alcohol consumption.

The study was published in the British Journal of Cancer .
