Poor oral hygiene can increase the risk of cardiovascular disease.

The Dutch Society for the Promotion of Dentistry (NMT) urges us to as clean and healthy teeth as possible to care. The bacteria responsible for dental plaque play a role in calcification of the arteries of heart patients.

More risk of heart attack

Still shocking. Various studies have shown that the risk of cardiac and/or vascular disorders increases by twenty percent if your gums are inflamed † If you are younger than 65 and you have chronic periodontitis, the chance is even 44 percent.

So get busy brushing and flossing. The advice of dentists? Brush well twice a day and have the gums regularly assessed by a dentist and/or dental hygienist. Cardiologists also see good oral care as a contribution to the prevention of heart problems † For example, bacteria commonly found in the mouth, such as Chlamydia Pneumoniae , also often found in vasoconstrictions of, for example, the carotid arteries.
