Dutch people smoke less

Smoking behavior among the Dutch is changing. On the one hand, the number of daily smokers is decreasing, while the occasional smoker is increasing. This is apparent from a study by TNS NIPO on behalf of STIVORO.

The number of daily smokers continues to fall :21.5 percent in 2009 versus 22.2 percent in 2008. Besides the fact that there are fewer smokers, on average there are also less cigarettes (14.4) consumed per day. In 2008 the counter stood at an average of 14.9 cigarettes.

Although the group of daily smokers continues to decrease , due to the increase in sporadic smokers, the percentage of smokers is rising from 27 percent in 2008 to 28 percent in 2009.

Furthermore, the research shows that a quarter of smokers who quit in 2009 did so because of health considerations † Finances also play a role.

A total of 19,693 Dutch people took part in the smoking survey.
