Disorders after stroke usually permanent

After a stroke, 70 percent of people suffer from complaints in the field of thinking, emotion, behavior or language.

Every day more than 100 people in the Netherlands get a stroke and end up in the hospital. Three quarters of these people survive the stroke. However, the consequences are often very serious.

'After a stroke you see people change † They get a different temperament, a different personality. It is difficult for the environment to accept that the spouse, parent or child is no longer the same person as before," said Peter Schoof director of the Brain Foundation.

During a stroke, parts of the brain temporarily lose blood supply , which can damage them. This explains why people sometimes change.

Consequences
The consequences of a stroke can be very different. Complaints range from mental slowness, poor concentration, forgetfulness and impaired coordination to character changes † The severity of the disorders has to do with the degree of damage to the brain, but things like age and physical condition play a role.

This year the Brain Foundation will start a research program to stroke. Through this research, the Brain Foundation . hopes to better treat patients after their stroke. Via the website www.hersenstichting.nl is already the folder Life after a stroke to download.
