Tips for better digestion

Santéonline.nl gives tips for a better digestion!

Most Dutch people consider digestion to be of minor importance, according to research by the National Digestion Research conducted by TNS-NIPO. They believe that their digestion is good, but, surprisingly enough, it turns out that they do suffer from discomfort. Ten tips.

10 Digestive Tips:
1. Eat several small meals throughout the day, without taking in extra calories. That is, four to five small meals instead of two to three large ones.

2. Eat plenty of fiber-rich foods, at least 2 ounces of vegetables and 2 pieces of fruit per day. In addition, increase your daily portion of whole grains. But one in ten Dutch people gets enough fiber.

3. Eat more fish. Preferably three to five times a week and alternate fatty fish with lean fish.

4. Eat as little saturated fats and fried food as possible. It's okay to sin every now and then, but in moderation!

5. Eat more fermented milk products. Milk products with probiotics, bacteria with a proven effect on digestion, can give you an extra helping hand.

6. Eat as much lean meat as possible such as chicken, turkey, a lean cut of beef, pork or lamb (you can trim off any fat, even after cooking).

7. Drink more water – 2 liters a day – and cut down on alcoholic, sugary and caffeinated drinks.

8. Take enough time to eat and chew your food well and slowly.

9. Try to live as healthy as possible by getting enough exercise (preferably half an hour five times a week) and rest. Did you know that smoking has a slowing effect on digestion?

10. Maintain a healthy weight for your height. Overweight people are more likely to have digestive problems. If you are not sure whether your weight is healthy, ask your doctor. You don't have to be slim to have a healthy weight.
